Botox parties may not be safe

  Figures from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reveal that there were almost 2.8 million Botox procedures performed in 2007. Botox has been the most popular cosmetic procedure since 2000. In the last five years, the number of Botox procedures performed has increased by 82%.

  And because of this popularity, some disturbing trends in Botox treatment have surfaced specifically this so-called Botox parties.

  ASAPS stressed that Botox treatments are safe only when performed by a qualified clinician in an appropriate setting. And before any patient undergoes the treatment, he or she should say YES to the following questions:

  1. Have you been asked to provide a complete medical history?
  2. Have you been advised on alternative treatments?
  3. Have you been advised of the risks and given your informed consent?
  4. Is a qualified clinician administering the treatment?
  5. Is the physical setting appropriate for administering medical treatment, including handling emergency situations?
  6. Do you know what you are being injected with?
  7. Are you willing and able to follow post-treatment instructions?
  8. Will you receive adequate follow-up care?

  The advantage of Botox parties is that it tends to reduce the cost of the patient’s individual treatment. However, the drawback is that proper measures for administering the treatment might not be followed. Thus, this poses a danger to those patients who are to receive the treatment. ASAPS advises that it is in the patient’s best interest to get the treatment from a doctor’s surgical clinic.
