Surgeon Kenrick Spence, M.D. of California claims to have improved the liposuction recovery time through a process that reduces patient downtime, to include the duration of the surgical procedure.
Calling the new process SculptEase, its major feature is the addition of surface vibration performed during the infusion process. In a procedure known as PAL (power-assisted liposuction), Dr. Spence uses a vibrating, power-assisted cannula -- the wand that does the actual fat vacuuming under the skin. It is the vibration that causes the infusion segment to go much faster.
Dr. Spence has improved and refined the process for two years before completely applying the technique on patients. While performing liposuction, the surgeon noticed that his patients reported no feeling of discomfort even if he placed the vibrating cannula on top of the skin where the needle was inserted. Even, Dr. Spence observed the patients were barely distracted from their magazines or iPods when vibrations accompanied injections.
Consequently, Dr. Spence reduced the average duration of the surgical procedure from two hours to one hour and 15 minutes. Less discomfort and anxiety, and more importantly, patients recover faster, with less bruising and swelling.
In fact, majority of his patients reported to have returned to work the next day, with a few requiring 48 hours away from the job. ”In two or three days the typical patient can usually return to his or her exercise routine and can lift heavy things within a week,” says Dr. Spence.
