Cosmetic genital surgery may not be safe

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has made a statement considering the rising popularity of cosmetic genital surgery like labiaplasty and vaginoplasty. The prominent group of physicians says that is deceptive to give the impression that such procedures, which by some accounts are among the hottest new trends in plastic surgery, are “accepted and routine surgical practices”.

Also, the group issued a strong warning to women, saying that there is no evidence whatsoever to prove that cosmetic genital surgery is safe or effective.

This is the society’s response to the increasing popularity of genital surgeries, which are actually marketed to women on late-night TV. The ads call them vaginal rejuvenation, designer vaginoplasty, revirgination, and G-spot amplification. Doctors that are offering the procedure say that they can enhance women’s sexual pleasure and alleviate uncomfortable symptoms. To that, many patients actually agree.

However, experts say otherwise. Critics of cosmetic genital surgery argue that women are unnecessarily exposing very sensitive body parts to procedures with questionable benefits and unknown risks. In fact, ACOG’s Committee on Gynecologic Practice concluded in a two-page statement published in the September issue of its magazine that “Absence of data supporting the safety and efficacy of these procedures makes their recommendation untenable.”

Also, other experts do not like the idea of offering surgical fixes to problems that are better solved by correcting women’s misconceptions about their bodies and boosting their self-esteem.

To make matters worse for the group, there are dozens of sites on the internet promising to help women by surgically altering their genitals and repairing the after-effects of childbirth. Most of these sites contain graphic before-and-after photos along with glowing patient testimonials.
