There are many cosmetic procedures available today than in the last five to ten years. The developments of medicine and the invention of new technology have paved the way for advancements in cosmetic treatments and procedures. New techniques have also been developed in order to address specific demands and requirements.

These new techniques and procedures require specialized skills and training in order to perform them correctly. That’s why it is very important that patients know where to go exactly if they want to undergo a certain kind of procedure.

Lower Hudson Online interviews physicians Amy Newburger, Rhoda Narins, and Marvin Fier about the trends and nature of cosmetic treatments and procedures.

Dr. Amy Newburger, a dermatologist based in Scarsdale, recently treated a patient who came in with lopsided eyebrows after a Botox treatment. "There is much more to these cosmetic procedures than squirting some substance into a wrinkle or following a diagram to inject a muscle relaxant or (using) a chart to tell you which laser setting to use,'' Newburger says.

Dr. Rhoda Narins, a dermatologic surgeon, says that microdermabrasion, light skin peels and some hair-removal laser treatments are usually safe to have done outside a physician's office. But when it comes to injectable fillers, Botox and most other laser-based procedures, patients should go to a trained physician.

When it comes to dentistry, Dr. Marvin Fier says patients who are contemplating cosmetic work must also do their homework.

"Cosmetic dentistry is really a very specific discipline that requires additional education and experience far beyond what we're taught in school. It's a marriage of art and science, and it's unfortunate that most general dentists don't understand the additional requirements of study and time they need to excel at these very demanding procedures.''

It is good to know that there are actually specific guidelines to follow when it comes to getting a specific cosmetic procedure. Surely, cosmetic treatments are not created equal. There are those that need well-trained hands in order for them to done properly and to avoid unnecessary complications. And there are others that can just be done outside the surgeon’s office. Knowing the difference is what patients need to know more about if they want their cosmetic undertakings to be successful. Some research on the part of the patients is crucial in this case.
