Dysmorphophobia has done it again.
A 30-year old woman from Sanchung thought that her eyes are ugly. She underwent eyelid surgery. She didn’t like the result. She believed that her eyes were scaring the customers away from their breakfast shop. And one Tuesday morning, she committed suicide.
The woman was struggling with the condition called dysmorphophobia, a mental disorder that causes patients to dislike their own bodies excessively. Taiwan Headlines tells the story:
The victim's family said that Yang felt she had become ugly after receiving cosmetic surgery to create double eyelids, a physical trait that is considered to be a sign of beauty in many Asian countries.
Yang thought her eyes had become disproportional in size after her surgery and believed the "ugliness" of her face was scaring people away from the family's breakfast shop, continued the family.
It seems that eyelid surgery caused the woman to commit suicide. The news pointed that out based on the statements of the victim’s family. However, dysmorphophobia was already there even before the surgery. Hsu Cheng-tien, a mental health expert also made that one clear:
People with dysmorphophobia are extremely critical of their looks and often undergo cosmetic surgery to change what they don't like about their bodies.
Michael Jackson and Uma Thurman are also said to have this type of mental disorder. This explains why Michael has had multiple surgeries done on his face and is still not happy with his appearance.
Dysmorphophobia kills. People suffering from this disorder should seek help in order to avoid tragedies like this.
