If the pair causes skin irritation, back strain or breathing problems, it is likely that they are there hanging heavier than usual. Having ample bosom is a desirable physical attribute, but when health is at risk, many women choose to undergo breast reduction surgery (Reduction Mammaplasty). And because a breast reduction surgery is usually performed to promote health, in some instances the procedure can be covered under medical insurance.
For aesthetics purposes, some women are just not comfortable with large breasts especially if they interfere with their fashion choices and overall lifestyle. In fact, among ordinary mortals or commuting citizens, possessing large breast tends to invite ridicule and nasty stares.
How large it can get? -- Clinically speaking, subject ‘large breasts’ is a pair diagnosed to be causing health problems such as severe back pain. Unless necessary because of extreme discomfort or if the condition poses danger to health, most breast specialist plastic surgeons will only operate on women over 18. (Normally, a woman’s breasts shall have fully developed when she reaches the age of 16.) The patient will also be asked if she is acceptable of scarring and other risks, and must commit not to breast feed in the future.
The standard procedure is to make an incision -- similar to the shape of an inverted keyhole -- from the lower crease of the breast, above the nipple in a circle, and back down to the crease of the other side of the breast.
The nipple and areola, which remain connected to the nerves throughout surgery, are moved up on the breast while excess skin, fat, and tissue are removed. The remaining skins on each side of the breast are moved up, to the center, and stitched together to create a new contour.
However, the method of surgery, which usually lasts between 1 and 3 hours per breast, can vary slightly based on the patient's need and the doctor's recommendation. The patients actually are presented with several options – for example, liposuction can be used instead of or in combination with surgery.
Reduction Mammaplasty is performed under general anesthesia, and can be done as an outpatient procedure, although with some patients a hospital stay is required.
Following surgery, patients wear bandages or supportive bra for several weeks while the swelling and bruising recede. Depending on personal recovery and the type of activities, healing is expected between one and six weeks. Around this period, patients can typically return to work. The actual results of surgery are usually realized three months after the surgery.
