We mentioned it here – that, medical hair transplants will exceed expectations in creating a natural and healthy-looking full head of hair that many have been looking forward to for years. And then, we are being assured of excellent results from experienced and reputable hair restoration surgeons.
Indeed, every now and then, good news about hair loss treatments comes along. In more ways, those success stories are true. Still, like nasty falling hairs, some questions about hair transplant remain persistent. To all the balding men (and women, too!) out there, there is no point delaying the asking – else, hasty falling hairs would beat them to it.
To reiterate, an ideal candidate for hair transplant procedure is one who: Has healthy hair growth at the sides and back of the head to serve as ‘donor areas’; is self-conscious about his or her appearance; has realistic goals and expectations; and, has a good understanding of the procedure. We are helping you with the latter, and so, “hair-raising,” if we may call -- yes, with sense of urgency, let us deal on the most pressing concerns about hair transplant:
What are the uncertainties and risks?
Head on, infection and scarring can occur in the grafted areas. As a precaution, the doctor may prescribe antibiotics before the procedure, or afterward if infection occurs. Not much to worry about scars, these are minimal and are concealed by growing hair.
Be aware that there is a chance that some of the grafts will not work hence hair loss could still occur after the procedure. Another surgical procedure may be required if the skin plugs die -- this condition is visible when patches of bald spots around the head appear giving. Additional surgery may be required to correct this ‘unnatural’ appearance.
There is little chance that risk and complication could occur, especially If executed by qualified and hair loss specialist plastic surgeon. On the part of the patient, it is always important that the doctor’s instructions – both before and after the procedure -- are closely followed. This way, the risks of complications are reduced.
What are the standard costs?
Generally, the cost of a hair transplant depends upon the extent of the problem area. And then, the rate may vary on the elements that factor into the cost, such as the doctor, the location, technique used, related medications, and your goals for the final result of the hair transplant.
Cost details should be laid out beforehand such as payment terms and options accepted for the procedure. Doctors may charge per graft while others may bill per session. Also, it should be clear from the start that a repeat procedure may be necessary and that doctors usually arrange a ‘special deal’ for this case. If the hair transplant does not meet agreed upon goals, it is also imperative that a patient knows the surgeon’s policy in regards to correcting or repeating the procedure.
How’s soreness?
As would any surgery, uncertainties, risk, costs and payment options are just some of the practical concerns. And then some like: How long will the procedure take? And, where is the operation performed? What kind of anesthesia will the doctor use during the surgery? When hairs are removed from the ‘donor areas’ -- Will the new head of hair look natural? Will the procedure hurt…more precisely, how’s soreness?
