NHS surgeons pressured to offer free surgery to unqualified patients

The National Health Service is offering free plastic surgery procedures to patients who obviously need them. Patients who are extremely disfigured or those who need corrective work following an accident are the ones intended to receive such type of services. However, it seems that women are trying their best to get a free surgery by exaggerating their unhappiness with their looks.

A new study reveals that plastic surgeons are being forced into offering patients cosmetic surgery that patients don’t really need. Women try to persuade the surgeons by wearing unflattering makeup or ugly clothing just to prove their point that they deserve to be given free plastic surgery.

The NHS currently offers free tummy tucks, breast implants, and nose jobs - procedures that are actually high in demand.

According to the latest study, which will be published in the British Journal of Plastic Surgery, surgeons are turning a blind eye to the rules because of the pressure from patients. Some surgeons are said to agree to operate - despite knowing there are no medical grounds - because they cannot face the time and misery involved in turning patients down.

The study also states that almost half of requests for nose jobs and a quarter of requests for tummy tucks were granted. Around half the patients who asked for breast reduction were successful, and slightly less than a fifth of those who wanted breast enhancements.

It is also found out that patients who convince doctors their appearance is giving them psychological problems can be offered treatment.

Well, this is something that the NHS should do something about. It is noble to offer free surgery to those who really need it but they should also implement strict rules that define who should and shouldn’t be given such privilege.
