The most common problem of patients who have undergone a massive weight loss surgery is the presence of apron of loose excess skin, tissue and fat on their abdominal area. This is a very unsightly condition as loose tissues get to hang on the person’s belly. And this is one major reason why people who went through weight loss surgery are advised to go through a cosmetic body contouring procedure.

One such procedure is panniculectomy – a plastic surgery procedure that aims to remove the pannus – those unsightly excess tissues in the lower portion of the abdominal wall. The pannus can weigh as much as 100 pounds in some individuals and can extend as low as the knees. Other patients can even have two or three redundant skin folds.

The removal of the pannus is important for personal hygiene. The extra skin hanging over the pubic regions gets moist and often has a foul odor. Aside from that, people may suffer from skin infections beneath the skin folds if the pannus is left unchecked.

Furthermore, removing the pannus also means freedom from various discomforts. The loose, hanging skin can make it very difficult for individuals to find clothing that fits appropriately. Also, even the simple chores of walking, sitting or standing may turn out to be difficult to execute.

A panniculectomy is not the same with the usual tummy tuck. The former removes the overhanging skin and fat from the lower abdomen, while the latter removes excess abdominal skin and fat as well as tightening the muscles of the abdominal wall and repositions the navel.

Those who are suffering from loose excess skin can go to their plastic surgeons and ask more about the panniculectomy procedure.
