Physician opens surgery center for vaginoplasty

  Despite the controversies surrounding vaginal repair, plastic surgeon Christopher Warner went on and opened his very own Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation Institute of Washington. It was a tough move considering that many people, including other plastic surgeons, don't approve of promoting procedures that may challenge medical orthodoxy.

  Warner, a 39-year-old board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist, believes that he is building a business as the first area physician to perform controversial procedures that use a laser to enhance sexual gratification by repairing tissue damaged by childbirth. Also, these procedure aim to give women a youthful aesthetic look or to make those who are not virgins appear to be as such.

  Vaginal repair is one of the many cosmetic surgery procedures that are believed to have proliferated by the growing popularity of cosmetic surgery and or reality TV makeover shows such as the E! Network's Dr. 90210.

  Critics are alarmed with the trend. They say there is no evidence that these procedures are safe or effective because they have never been studied scientifically. Even others say the procedures foster or create insecurity while doing little to treat the underlying causes of female sexual dissatisfaction.

  The laser procedure costs about 3,000 to 9,000 bucks. The surgeries are also performed with other cosmetic procedure such as liposuction. They are also rarely covered by insurance.

  Meanwhile, Thomas Stovall, past president of the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons, is adamant in opposing these types of procedures. Stovall said that there is absolutely zero scientific literature that supports the notion that firing a laser of any kind will tighten vaginal muscles.

  However, critics and proponents agree that the number of women getting vaginal repair procedures are increasing. David Matlock, a California gynecologist says he has performed more than 3,000 in the last 12 years and has trained 140 doctors in a dozen states and 20 countries.
