Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure that is popular with people from all walks of life. From famous celebrities to ordinary citizens, liposuction has become a household name for an excellent and effective body contouring procedure.

Despite liposuction’s popularity and general safety, plastic surgeons don’t take the procedure lightly. Surgeons are fully aware that liposuction, like any other plastic surgery procedure, if done improperly, can cause major complications and even death. This is why appropriate measures and preparations have to be done prior to the operation.

So, what exactly do surgeons do during the preparations?

Dr. Robert Gilman, a plastic surgeon featured in an article of Metro West Daily News, shares about the laborious task of preparing for a liposuction procedure.

Gilman said surgical instruments must be heated in what are essentially "giant pressure cookers" that sterilize the surgical tools and prevent infections.

"You have to have daily logs that your sterilizing equipment has been tested for growth of bacteria and spores," said Gilman, of Plastic Surgery Specialists Inc. in Wellesley.

A hollow stainless steel tube called a cannula is inserted into the body during liposuction and used to suck out fat with the help of a vacuum. A doctor must be careful to know where the tip of the cannula is at all times, or it could poke an internal organ, causing injury, Gilman said.

Prior to this, plastic surgeons must take a detailed medical history of the patient in order to determine if the patient is healthy enough to undergo the procedure. Emotional health is also a factor to consider. Plastic surgeons have to be sure that the patients have realistic expectations about the effect this procedure will bring into their lives.

Above all else, patients need to choose the right plastic surgeon to do the procedure. Liposuction surgery should be performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon alone. The procedure must take place either in a hospital or in any accredited surgical facility. This way, patients are protected from surgery malpractice that may cause terrible accidents just like what happened to a young woman who went through a liposuction surgery inside a condominium’s basement.
