The problem is may be one or two of the following:
Frown lines that run between the eyebrows, smoker's lines which are vertical lines on the mouth, marionette lines at the corner of the mouth, worry lines that run across the forehead, crow's feet at the corner of the eyes, deep smile lines that run from side of the nose to corners of the mouth, cheek depressions, some acne scars, and other facial scars (providing they don't have a sharp edge).
Collagen, found in the dermis -- the mid-layer portion of skin -- is composed of fibroblast cells. New cells grow when fibroblast cells form a fibrous network providing structural support for the skin.
Through the natural processes of ageing, collagen in the skin is gradually lost and contributes to the formation facial lines and furrows.
The process involves the injection -- using very fine needles – of tiny quantities of collagen under the line or scar. When injected into the person’s skin both bovine and human forms of collagen are accepted as if they were the body's own collagen, forming a network of collagen fibres, thus rejuvenating the ageing skin.
Collagen replacement therapy can be combined with other cosmetic procedures, including Botox® Injections and laser skin resurfacing. The effects of collagen implant can be maintained by small ‘top-up’ collagen injections two or three times a year.
Human collagen
To manufacture living skin-equivalents, usually used in treating burns and ulcers, human collagen implants were purified and isolated from human skin and grown in a laboratory for the last ten years or so.
Allergic reactions are very unlikely, so no skin test is necessary for those planning to receive human collagen.
Human collagen brands include Zyderm® and Cosmoderm®, used for fine lines; and, Zyplast® and CosmoDerm®, for deeper furrows. Other brands include Dermalogen®, Cymetra, and CosmoPlast®.
Bovine collagen
Collagen replacement therapy uses injectable bovine collagen, made of sterile, purified collagen from cow skin. Zyderm®, Zyplast® and Resoplast®. are popular brands of this type of collagen.
Since injectable bovine collagen is derived from cows it may cause allergic reactions -- one or two skin tests are required. Studies show that approximately 3% of the population is allergic to bovine collagen.
Bovine collagen is not recommended if a patient is allergic to foods, especially meat products; has a family or personal history of severe allergies (including asthma, hay fever and atopic dermatitis; or has any previous reaction to a test dose of collagen.
