The 'rear' on the forefront: The trend on buttocks augmentation

With 'shake-your-bon-bons' and 'bootylicious' thing upon us, a body 'well put together' is one with shapely buttocks on it.  Popular celebrities are at it.  Cultural crossover suggests it.  The fashion trends dictate it.

"The rear is the new front," the media would hark.  Indeed, the fashion spotlight has been focused lately on buttocks.  Precisely because "How’s a shapely form without giving importance to the lower body curves?"

Autologous fat injection or the grafting of fat from one body part to add volume to another is one of the most reliable procedures now is being used to enhance gluteal contours.  Through liposuction, fat cells are removed from donor sites, which may be the abdomen, hips, back, or thighs.  The extracted fats are then injected in “layers” into the buttocks.  However, it's difficult to predict how much fats the body will reabsorb, hence, multiple procedures may be necessary.

Another alternative for reshaping the buttocks is the use of implants.  For example, a silicone implant can be inserted into the pocket below the gluteus muscle and above the pelvic bone by making an incision in the fold between the buttock ‘cheeks’.   After surgery, the area surrounding the ‘cheeks’ is taped to firmly hold the implants in position as the tissues heal.

Implants are suggested to patients with flat or poorly defined buttocks caused by congenital deformity or heredity.  It is important to note that buttock implants are not effective for treatment of sagging buttocks, which often may occur after significant weight loss.

To address patients' desire for firmer, higher, rounder buttocks, plastic surgeons have adapted standard techniques, experts are developing new ones and innovations in buttock augmentation surgery have been discussed by leading experts, most notably by the members of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).

In particular, the plastic surgeons are wary of aesthetics of the 'ideal' buttocks nothing that there are surgical techniques most appropriate for certain patients.
